Pro Staff Question - How Do You Rig Hooks On Senkos And Brush Hogs When Bass Fishing
Charles "The Bass Doctor" Stuart's Answer
Hello Dennis!
Well you struck gold sending your question to BASS ON HOOK as I am also one of the professional staff of Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits.
The Senko A Great Soft Plastic Bass Fishing Lure
The Senko comes in a number of sizes and colors which I am sure you already know!
The most popular is the 5 inch Senko and this bait can be fished in a variety of ways.
Whacky Style
Placing the hook in the center of the Senko with the hook exposed.
This is a great presentation for skipping under docks and lay downs.
I would recommend a weed guard if there is a possibility of getting snagged on wood or heavy cover.
Texas Style
Rigged as you would a regular plastic worm with the hook point " texposed " back into the surface of the Senko or Kreature (a Brush Hog style bait) to avoid picking up pieces of weed.
Remember the Senko is heavier than most other worms on the market and unless the wind is really blowing hard, I would not use any weight.
Carolina Rig
The Carolina rig style is fished in the same manner as the Texas rig but for deep presentation.
I like to use a VERY long leader (4 to 6 feet) so that the Senko can fall naturally once the weight of the rig has touched the bottom.
Drop Shot Finesse Rig
The ideal Senko for this rig is either the 3 or 4 inch model.
The Senko should be "nose hooked" and allowed to move freely on the line.
Gently twitching the rod will impart action into the Senko which the fish cannot resist.
Tight Lines!

Dennis "The Fishin Professor" Bryant's Answer
Dennis,
Thank you for your question on a much ignored subject that sometimes leaves too much up to the individual's imagination and personal preferences.
I like to use an offset wide-gap 3/0 sized Aberdeen-Style Lazer Hook, either without a weight at all or by inserting a 3" finishing nail well into the head of the rubber beyond, but in line with the hook shank.
It seems to make the lure act more naturally during the presentation.
A VERY IMPORTANT part of the whole setup is keeping the hook and/or weight directly in the center of the rubber so that it falls straight down on the drop.
Good Fishin'!

Leo Watson's Answer
Hello Dennis,
Thank you for writing in.
For the Senkos I rig it 2 different ways.
One for fishing brush or grassy areas I rig it Texas style so that it will stay weedless and will be less likely to hang up.
The other way is the so called wacky style.
Most Senkos are fished weightless and one way you can control your fall rate is by hook size.
For Texas style I may range from a 1/0 to as much as a 5/0.
For wacky worming most of the time I will use a circle hook.
With regard to the brush hog I will rig it much like the Senko.
Most of the time this is fished in vegetation or heavy cover.
You want to rig it so that hang ups are at a minimum.
Here is a short video on the action a brush hog imitates
I hope this has answered your question.
As always if you have any more questions just forward them through this fine web site.
Thank you,
Leo Watson
